What is the St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop?
The St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop provides many items and assistance to many individuals and organizations within the Stillwater community and area. The Thrift Shop is a store manned by staff and volunteers that sells donated items of all kinds to the public for very low prices.
In addition to selling pre-owned and some new items, such as clothes, household goods, books, toys, gifts and cards, The Thrift Shop also provides huge amounts of clothing free to people in need – referred to us by local agencies, such as Domestic Violence, DHS, Red Cross, Child Welfare, Mission of Hope, and many others.
How does Saint Andrew’s Thrift Shop operate?
Although it is a Ministry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, the Thrift Shop has its own governing board and officers. The Thrift Shop board is composed of church members, shop volunteers and individuals in the community interested in supporting its mission. Board meetings are held monthly in the Canterbury Room of St. Andrew’s at 4:00 pm on the third Wednesday of the month.
The Thrift Shop maintains a small number of paid staff and volunteers to operate the shop. Our volunteers include men, women and students from a large variety of backgrounds, talents and skills. Volunteers can give as much time and effort as they can provide – there is no minimum or maximum amount of time required to be a valuable volunteer at Saint Andrew’s Thrift Shop. Volunteers can contribute as little as being a substitute volunteer on an “as needed” basis, to volunteering from one to several days a week or month. Or they may find a particular talent or skill they enjoy doing at the Thrift Shop, such as at the sales counter, working on or displaying the merchandise, or helping the customers.
History of The Thrift Shop
The St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop had its beginnings in November of 1966 in one of the rooms in Saint Andrew’s basement. Two ladies started the Thrift Shop by borrowing $100 for the purpose of a money-making project to fund the Women’s Auxiliary. The Project became so successful the first year, the women were able to repay the loan and the vestry gave permission to move The Thrift Shop into an apartment owned by the church, paying $50 per month in rent.
The Thrift Shop continued to grow and prosper, so by 1970, plans were made to move the shop to its current location in the Rectory, since the new Priest would live elsewhere. The Thrift Shop made monthly payments of $210 until the mortgage on the Rectory was paid in full. Once the mortgage was paid in full, the building has been used rent-free.
The Thrift Shop continued to thrive and by 1983, a large workroom was added. In 1990, the inside of the Thrift Shop building was renovated and new display units were built which expanded the merchandise display area. By 1991, the shop outgrew a rented storage unit and an additional 1150 square feet were added for even more display and storage. Also, the parking area was paved and other outside improvements were made in recent years.
Every day is a “New Day” at the Thrift Shop and you will never know what you will find or who you can help. We hope we will see you soon at the Saint Andrew’s Thrift Shop as a donor, volunteer, customer or a recipient.
