Saint Andrew's
Thrift Shop
History
The Saint Andrew's Thrift Shop had its beginnings in November of 1966 in one
of the rooms in Saint Andrew's basement. Two ladies started the Thrift
Shop by borrowing $100 for the purpose of a money-making project to fund the
Women's Auxiliary. The Project became so successful the first year, the
women were able to repay the loan and the vestry gave permission to move The
Thrift Shop into the Apartment, paying $50 per month in rent.
The Thrift Shop continued to grow and prosper, so by 1970, plans were made to
move The Thrift Shop into the Rectory (present building), since the new Priest
would live elsewhere. The Thrift Shop made monthly payments of $210 until
the mortgage on the Rectory was paid in full. Once the mortgage was paid
in full, the building has been used rent-free.
The Thrift Shop continued to thrive and by 1983, a large workroom was added.
In 1990, the inside of the Thrift Shop building was renovated and new display
units were built which expanded the merchandise display area. By 1991, the
shop outgrew a rented storage unit and an additional 1150 square feet were added
for even more display and storage. Also, the parking area was paved and
other outside improvements were made in recent years.
The Thrift Shop became a Ministry of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, has its own government and elects its own officers through its
volunteers and staff members.
The Thrift Shop holds monthly staff and volunteer
meetings on the third Saturday of every month at 9:00 am in the Parish Hall.
The Thrift Shop's income is divided between three entities -
Operational Expenses
- which includes staff salaries and benefits, building maintenance, and supplies;
Saint Andrew's Episcopal
Church - for support of the educational programs and special needs of
the church; and
The Local Community
- which includes many organizations (as many as 27 for 2004) who asked for and
received assistance from the Thrift Shop.
